5 And when his disciples went across the sea, they forgot to bring bread. 6 And he said to them, “Consider and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the Sadducees.” 7 But they were thinking within themselves, saying, “It is because we have not brought bread.” 8 Then Jesus, knowing this, said: “Why do you consider within yourselves, O little in faith, that it is because you have no bread? 9 Do you not yet understand, nor remember, the five loaves among the five thousand men, and how many containers you took up? 10 Or the seven loaves among the four thousand men, and how many baskets you took up? 11 Why do you not understand that it was not because of bread that I said to you: Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the Sadducees?” 12 Then they understood that he was not saying that they should beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and the Sadducees.

14 And they forgot to take bread. And they did not have any with them in the boat, except one loaf. 15 And he instructed them, saying: “Consider and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the leaven of Herod.” 16 And they discussed this with one another, saying, “For we have no bread.” 17 And Jesus, knowing this, said to them: “Why do you consider that it is because you have no bread? Do you not yet know or understand? Do you still have blindness in your heart? 18 Having eyes, do you not see? And having ears, do you not hear? Do you not remember, 19 when I broke the five loves among the five thousand, how many baskets full of fragments you took up?” They said to him, “Twelve.” 20 “And when the seven loaves were among the four thousand, how many baskets of fragments did you take up?” And they said to him, “Seven.” 21 And he said to them, “How is it that you do not yet understand?”

1 Then, as great crowds were standing so close that they were stepping on one another, he began to say to his disciples: “Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.
